biography

i’m a palestinian artist living in scotland. having grown up in rammallah since i was very young and remained there till i was 18, palestine has held a special place in my heart, it always will be part of my life, my identity, my soul. the work that i do is  predominantly reflecting this tug, this pull that ramallah and palestine hold on me. the work has always been about my investigation of what is home, as the longer i stay away, the harder it is to feel connected. 
home, and where would you call home, matters. but the reality of home changes as you change.  home becomes embroiled in myth and nostalgia. Never is quite what it was or what you wanted it to be or become.

having fallen in love with photography in art college, i have continued to work with the medium, but in a variety of ways.
i mainly use an old fashioned way of working: liquid light, a photographic emulsion that can be painted on a variety of surfaces and developed like a black and white photograph in the darkroom. i also use cyanotype, also called architects blue print. the romantic in me loves the unpredictability of both these mediums. you can never get these mediums to behave in the way you want them to, so it is always a battle of unexpected outcomes. i do enjoy using colour, so i use screenprinting to add the colour, and stitching to hold things together.

I do not call myself a photographer, or a printmaker, or a film maker, or a painter, or an intallation artist, i am an artist that tries to reflect my thoughts and ideas in which ever medium suits at the time.
